What is Te Huanui?

Te Huanui is Te Ataarangi's online programme that's open to anyone who wants to learn te reo Māori.  We are currently offering Levels 1 and 2.

Te Ataarangi has been helping people learn and speak te reo Māori for 40+ years.  Going online with Te Huanui means Ataarangi classes taught using the rākau method are accessible to all of us, no matter where we are in the world.

“I've made the most progress I've ever made in the last 20 weeks."

- Jesse Jenkins, December 2024

How does it work?

Te Huanui is a 20 week reo Māori course with a focus on getting you to kōrero (speak).  Classes are online for two hours each week and held in the evenings to suit our busy lives.

The classes start with a large group session before breaking into smaller groups.  These smaller groups are guided by Ataarangi teachers who support you to kōrero Māori.

There are no tests or assessments, just practice, repetition and a focus on having fun using the reo.

“You get the large group first. You hear the examples being given. And then while they're doing that you're saying it as well. And then when you go into the smaller group, the kopa iti, you get to hear everybody else saying it. Then it’s your turn and if you don't get it right, it doesn't matter.  The next person has their turn after you.  And eventually you start to learn how to say whatever it is we're learning.”

Is there a cost?

We do not receive government funding so there is a fee for Te Huanui to help us cover costs.  Please get in touch with us if covering the cost is a challenge for you.  You will soon be able to make four installments over eight weeks if you wish.

People have also asked how they can give koha to support others to learn the reo - tēnā koutou!  We'll let you know as soon as that is possible.

"It's a shame that we have to pay for our reo. But yeah the putea, it is what it is since they took our funding.  I think if you want to compare it to uni fees, it's cheap."

- Erana Hemara Wahanui, December 2024

"I was like, ‘oh no, I don't want to make a mistake and make a fool of myself’. But the class wasn't like that at all.  Everybody was making mistakes and it was fun. Making mistakes was how we learnt... It was always good vibes. Always."

- Jesse Jenkins, December 2024
