Our Kaupapa
Te Ataarangi
Te Ataarangi has been a major force in the language revitalisation movement in Aotearoa for more than 40 years. We are Te Ataarangi ki te Kāhui Maunga and our rohe (region) covers Taranaki, Manawatū and Whanganui. Developed by Kāterina Te Heikōkō Mataira and Ngoingoi Pewhairangi, Te Ataarangi has supported thousands of people to speak Māori in homes and communities. We are committed to nurturing the reo in tens of thousands more. This is what is needed for our reo rangatira to thrive. Kia kore koe e ngaro taku reo rangatira. May you never be lost to me my noble language. He aha tēnei a Te Ataarangi? What is Te Ataarangi? Te Ataarangi is a very distinctive reo learning approach. It was first adapted to reo Māori in the late 1970's by Ngoi Pēwhairangi and Katerina Mataira, two staunch advocates for reo Māori. The approach is based on a model of learning first developed in Europe. It gives the highest priority to speaking and interacting in a group. Here are five key features of Te Ataarangi you should know: Fluency from the start: All our learning is done in reo immersion, right from the very first word you become fluent without needing to translate. Then each lesson is structured to gradually build your reo and the range of kōrero you are capable in. Learn by listenting and speaking: Repeated practice of spoken reo helps tune your ability to listen and hear what sounds right and what sounds wrong. Before long you feel comfortable hearing reo and working out what people are saying. You can be in control of your learning. A close circle of supportive fellow learners: Being in the same small group of learners each week builds your confidence to speak more. Your group becomes your best support to continue speaking, not judging you or pushing you faster than you can go. No assessments: We don't run examinations (although Ataarangi has tried in the past to work in tertiary education). We don't give formal qualifications that place external criteria on your learning. Your best qualification is your ability to kōrero Māori and participate in reo rumaki. It's about communities: For over forty years Te Ataarangi has run classes in communities. Just low-key small community groups getting on with learning reo together. This is the first real opportunity to access Te Ataarangi online across the country and around the world.
